The finest of four known coins from Kys
Lot 1362
CARIA. Kys. 2nd-1st centuries BC. AE (Bronze, 16 mm, 2.60 g, 11 h). Laureate head of Zeus to right. Rev. KYITΩN Eagle standing right, wings spread; all within laurel wreath. HN online 1647 = Paris FG 552. Of the highest rarity, the second and by far the finest known coin from this mint. Beautiful earthen highlights on an attractive olive green patina. Faint marks, otherwise, about extremely fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

The coinage of the small Carian polis of Kys is extremely rare, with both types (the other showing Artemis on the obverse and a quiver and a spear on the reverse) now being known from two examples only. In fact, our coin is by far the most beautiful of the four known coins from this mint
